Slide PARTY is a narrated slideshow presenting slides made by the artist’s grandfather between 1960 and 1990 of their family in Durban, South Africa, alongside stories shared within the family. Structured as an anthology series, the work draws on the slide party as a forum for social gathering, storytelling, and close looking, recreating a space in which images are encountered collectively and histories are transmitted through conversation.

By bringing the physical, seemingly enduring form of the slide photograph into relation with the ephemerality and vulnerability of oral memory, Slide PARTY considers how images can become carriers for stories, and how the collective sharing of information might extend the life of histories that exist outside official archives. The work asks what forms of attention, care, and transmission become possible when we gather around images and listen to the stories attached to them.

An integral component of the work is that audiences are asked not to photograph or record the projected slides. This protects the privacy of the people depicted while preserving the slide party as a space for presence, listening, and the interpersonal transmission of stories.
