Building the Vernacular Archive

2024 - Ongoing

Stemming from my undergraduate thesis project Leisure, in which my focus was to create a book from my grandfathers photographs of my family, the urgent need to build a vernacular archive became apparent.

After returning home and realising the vast wealth of knowledge and history my family possesses, both in physical objects and oral histories, my focus has shifted toward creating a means of preserving and enagaging with these materials, bringing them back to life.

Instead of limiting these materials to a single book, I am building a vernacular archive—an ongoing and evolving effort to engage with and preserve our familial history before it is lost to time. This archive allows for a broader engagement with these images, documents, objects, and stories, each contributing to a larger, more comprehensive record of our past. It is a commitment to ensuring that our history is not just remembered, but actively maintained and shared.

Through dedicated care,
we can teach ourselves to remember.
